How To Create An Empowering Vision Board That Actually Works

Some of the world's most influential thought leaders—Deepak Chopra, Jack Canfield, and Oprah, to mention a few—all agree that turning your dreams into reality is very possible. But it’s not magic- it’s inspired action. And a vision board is a great physical reminder to take action that is in alignment with your desired goals.
From Well + Good:
"If you’ve heard the term “vision board” before, chances are it was straight from Oprah Winfrey’s mouth, like years ago. Since then, these goal-manifesting collages have become a seriously helpful creative tool—beloved by life coaches, the wellness-obsessed, and super successful #ladybosses from Ellen Degeneres to Beyonce—because “they totally work.”

What exactly is a vision board?

A vision board also knows as a dream board, is a powerful visualization tool. This inspirational collage serves as a tangible example, idea, or representation of where you are going or where you want to be. A vision board represents your dreams, your goals, and your ideal life.

The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words,” certainly holds true here. And according to Chicken Soup For The Soul author, Jack Canfield, “By representing your goals with pictures and images you will actually strengthen and stimulate your emotions because your mind responds strongly to visual stimulation… and your emotions are the vibrational energy that activates the Law of Attraction and manifesting.”

Why make a vision board?

A year ago, life changed dramatically for all of us. As hit after hit came our way, we lost much of the things that made us happy. During these uncertain times, creating a vision board can bring us some much-needed and well-deserved JOY. We all need more joy. We all need something to hold onto. Take an afternoon or a weekend, and use the steps below to create your own feel-good vision board. This visualization tool can be the most perfect tool to help keep you inspired. And when you’re inspired, you feel GOOD. When you feel GOOD, you attract more good into your life.

Plus, it’s an EXCELLENT alignment tool. Is going out and getting wasted on a Friday night in alignment with having a healthy body that feels strong? Nope. Your vision board will help you remember that. Is spending another 4 hours scrolling through Insta in alignment with your dream of becoming a yoga teacher and completing your training? No, it's not. You get the point.

Our vision board serves as a handy, dandy, friendly reminder that we have dreams, goals, and an AWESOME LIFE ahead of us. And we get there by the choices and the baby steps that we take right now. Those baby steps compound and eventually lead to that dream life of yours.

A vision board is hands down an awesome tool to keep you on your wagon, wherever that wagon is headed.

If vision boards are not your thing...

If you don’t think vision boards are your thing, you’re not alone. Talk show host and self-care expert, Nitika Chopra had the same feeling at first…

“When I first started making vision boards, I honestly thought the whole thing was kind of silly. I didn't understand how sticking some pretty pictures on a board was going to change my life and I had a lot of resistance to it. But even so, I noticed a shift in my thinking. Every time I would wonder where my life was going or started to worry, my board was right there to remind me of my truth, of the things I really wanted for my life, and what's really possible. Once I saw that I wasn't just feeling better, but I was also creating a lot of the things in my life that I'd put on my board, I became a firm believer that they DO work.”

If even digital entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, can set the time aside to make a vision board, you can too. Success leaves clues, and if all the pros and uber successful entrepreneurs are utilizing the power of vision boards, what do you say we follow in their very successful footsteps?!

The 4 Step Process for Making An Empowering Vision Board That Works

STEP ONE: Create a list of the goals and dreams you’d love to achieve within the next year.
In order to stay in alignment with your goals and move closer to them, you need to know what they are first. Spend some time getting clear on exactly what you want your ideal life to look like. Use the "feel method." If you were living your dream life, how would it feel? Let those feelings guide you when choosing your goals and dreams.

STEP TWO: This is where things get really fun! It's time to find images and words that represent that dream life/goal life of yours. You can use old magazines, new magazines, online pictures, pre-made kits, whatever! Each image that you pick should invoke the feeling of your dream achieved. If I want to become a CEO and it would feel amazing, freeing and exciting to be CEO, then all the images and texts I choose must invoke that feeling. The feeling is what accelerates the manifestation process. It helps us stay, again, in alignment with our dreams. If the feeling of being CEO is exciting, then why would we make a choice that has us feeling like crap? That is not alignment.

STEP THREE: Once you have collected enough images and texts, it’s time to make your vision board! Go to whatever local store is near you and get the most beautiful poster size piece of paper you can find. I prefer to use an aesthetically pleasing cork board. You want your vision board to be a work of art. Also, make sure to collect additional supplies such as ribbon, felt, glitter, stickers, the works! I want you to look at your vision board and feel INSPIRED. The scrapbooking section of many stores is good for this. Once you have your chosen board, it's time to channel your inner Martha Stewart and glue, tack, or tape your images and texts to the paper or cork board in an arrangement that is visually exciting and pleasing to you.

STEP FOUR: Once you're done creating your vision board, USE IT! To get the full benefit from it, you want to place it somewhere you will see it every day. Start your mornings with a visualization meditation. This is where you take a few minutes to look over your vision board  and you do a guided visualization, where you see yourself LIVING the contents of your vision board. You only need 5 minutes a day for this! This visualization is powerful because again, it helps you to align with the path towards achieving your goals. Plus, by doing this visualization, you open yourself up to receive guidance from the Universe on how to accomplish those goals. That is what we call inspired action. You start to take action that is inspired that gets you closer and closer to living the dream life you so badly want. This daily, 5-minute visualization meditation will have you bursting with motivation to succeed! Do this in the morning so your mindset will start off being wired for success for the whole day, and you will be far more likely to notice and act on opportunities that will bring you closer to your goals.

One final piece of inspiration if you're still on the fence on creating a vision board...

Michelle Goldblum, founder of the highly popular and transformative, Soul Camp, used her very own vision board to create Soul Camp.  "Back in 2014 when we were first dreaming up Soul Camp, we wrote out a list of all of the instructors we would love to have teaching and speaking. We wrote out a list of all of our favorite healthy snacks. And we wrote out a list of companies that used the word SOUL in their name that we would love to have sponsor us. Every single instructor on that list was a part of Soul Camp 2014. Our canteen was overflowing with kale chips and almond butter, and Huffington Post GPS for the Soul and Soul Pancake sponsored us."

Now it's your turn to dream.
