Tips and Tools to Naturally Brighten Your Mood

By MoodMe
Feeling down, overwhelmed or stressed are all natural human emotions, but that doesn’t mean we want to get stuck wallowing in the suffering. Everyday life can be stressful but there are plenty of quick, natural, even scientifically-proven ways to boost your mood. Everything from the lighting of the room you’re in, to the music you listen to can have a positive effect on your outlook. We’re sharing our top 6 tools to employ when you could use a mood-boost!

Aromatherapy

Our olfactory senses are strong enough to invoke and awaken certain emotions within ourselves. Even a tiny whiff of a pleasant scent sends signals to the areas of the brain that affect not just our emotions, but our mood and memory as well. Aromatherapy can help relieve stress and promote relaxation. Lighting scented candles in your room or bathroom is a great way to create an ambiance of tranquility and brighten your mood. The soft light of the candles themselves works in unison with the various candle scents to foster calmness within the body while also making a room feel more inviting and warm. Think about doing some stretching or yoga, taking a bath, meditating or even doing a self-massage with aromatic candles lit. Relaxation techniques like these combined with aromatherapy can slow your heart rate and breathing, lower your blood pressure, and bring your mind and body into a more balanced state.

Lighting

Lesser known perhaps than aromatherapy is that lighting can also affect our mood- both for the worse as well as the better. Lower light in the evening hours can help prepare our bodies for sleep by stabilizing our circadian rhythm, but continuous levels of low light can contribute to feelings of depression. Bright light during the daylight hours is stimulating for the brain and naturally increases levels of serotonin, so it can improve your mood, help you focus and keep you energized. Reap these benefits by using halogen, LED or even fluorescent light bulbs at home.

Music

Music is a powerful way to both change mood as well as lean into a good mood you're already feeling. Music can be motivating, improve concentration, or it can help you zone out. Turning on your favorite tunes is a really simple way to let go of stress and anxiety and boost your mood.

Movement

Exercise releases chemicals in the brain, like endorphins and serotonin, that can physically improve your mood. From energy and happiness to brain health, memory, and sleep quality- physical activity has a ton of emotional and mental advantages to it. As an added bonus, these chemicals are released within just ten minutes of physical activity. Keep that statistic handy when you really don’t feel like working out. If you commit to a mere 10 minutes of movement, you will most likely be feeling good enough to not only finish the workout, but brighten up the rest of your day, as well.

Nature

Studies have shown that being in nature reduces stress, elicits positive feelings, and can even deepen the connection we feel to other people. Uplift your mood by getting outside and spending some time in nature each day. Sit in the sunshine, spend some time in the garden, go for a bike ride, a hike, or a short walk. No matter what you do, you’ll get some vitamin D along with the stress-relieving and mood boosting powers of being in nature.

Creativity

Another great tool to lift your mood is to make time for an activity that harnesses your creativity. Creative activities help focus the mind and have calming, uplighting effects on both the brain and body. You could try painting, drawing or sculpture; building or constructing something; creating a new, uplifting playlist; writing a poem, short story, essay, or journal entry; creating a vision board, or trying your hand at a DIY skincare recipe. Using the power of your own creativity can help you feel productive, reduce anxiety and stress and brighten your mood.
