Foods To Eat To Help Cure A Hangover

By MoodMe
We all know the feelings of a hangover- nausea, headaches, fatigue, dehydration, dizziness, and more. It can last from a few hours up to more or less the whole day after having drank a little too much the previous night. The bad news is, with what we know so far, there is no known cure for hangovers. But not to worry! There are several foods and drinks that can help alleviate symptoms, provide you with some much needed relief and potentially speed up the process of getting over a hangover - here are our top 5!

Avocado

You already know that avocados are a source of healthy fats as well as fiber, and are an excellent addition to your diet on any day, but this is especially so when you’re coping with a hangover. Avocados are a good source of niacin, a B-vitamin that, aside from being an essential human nutrient, offers support to the liver while it works to metabolize alcohol. This support can translate to easing your hangover by helping the liver to do its job effectively.

Watermelon

Fruits in general have a high content of natural sugars which may help to flush alcohol out of your system more quickly. Combine that with the hydrating effects of watermelon and you’ve got an excellent go-to morning hangover cure. Not watermelon season where you live? You could also reach for some grapes, an apple or some sliced mango.

Coconut Water

Speaking of hydrating…. It is one of the most important aspects of recovering from your hangover and downing some coconut water is an excellent hydrator. Coconut water in particular is a great source of natural electrolytes like sodium and potassium, and has shown in studies to be just as effective at rehydrating the body as traditional sports drinks. If you’re not a fan of coconut water there are also a wide variety of flavored electrolyte powders that you can easily add to a glass of water for the same effect.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal and other oat-based products are full of complex carbohydrates- the kind that provide a slow release of sugar into the bloodstream. This can help relieve some of the fatigue you feel after a night of heavy drinking as well as regulate your blood sugar.

Antioxidant-Rich Foods

Finally, antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, can relieve inflammation in the body, and combat free radicals, preventing them from causing damage in the body. Try adding a handful of blueberries to your morning oatmeal to double the benefits and quickly get over your hangover!

Though there is no actual cure for a hangover, these foods and drinks can help your body effectively do its job in metabolizing alcohol, rehydrating itself, regulating your blood sugar and more, meaning you’ll start feeling better, quicker. In the future, you can ease the symptoms of a hangover before you even start drinking, by imbibing on a full stomach, and choosing a pre-drinking meal with plenty of carbs, fats and lean protein. This will slow the alcohol's release into your bloodstream and simultaneously give you a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals. Lastly, try to drink plenty of water during the day when you know you will be indulging that night, and keep sipping on water between drinks. With these tips plus the foods to ease your morning hangover, you'll be feeling better before you know it!
